Bush nominates Lt. Gov. Donohue to federal judgeship

Business First of Buffalo - The (Albany) Business Review

The White House has nominated New York Lt. Gov. Mary Donohue for a federal judgeship.

Donohue is a former state Supreme Court justice in Rensselaer County, as well as a former county district attorney. Her nomination by President Bush has been expected for several months.

She was nominated to the federal judgeship for the Eastern District of New York state that was held by Frederick Scullin, who has retired. The judgeship is a lifetime appoint that currently pays $165,200 a year.

Donohue joined the Pataki ticket in 1998, when the governor dumped former Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey because he and his aides did not feel she was a team player. McCaughey went on to switch parties and run against Pataki that year.

Donohue has not been seeking the Republican nomination in 2006 to succeed Pataki, who announced last year he would not go after a fourth term as governor this year. He has been spending time in Iowa, New Hampshire and in other key election states in an apparent bid to launch a presidential campaign for 2008.
